Favourites from the month of March
Abigail Washburn & The Sparrow Quartet - Taiyang Chulai
Abigail Washburn & The Sparrow Quartet - Great Big Wall In China
A couple of tracks from a great album that came out late last year. Would have made my top 10 if I'd heard about it. These are Bluegrass covers of Chinese folk songs - not something I would think would work but they do perfectly.
Sufjan Stevens - You Are The Blood
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - Inspiration Information
Two of the best tracks from a very good charity compilation Dark Was The Night that also features standout tracks from My Brightest Diamond, The New Pornographers, Yeasayer and a great duet between Conor Oberst and Gillian Welch.
Mahotella Queens - Umculo Kawupheli (No End To Music)
Came across this on a Youtube clip posted on a blog. Being a big Bow Wow Wow fan I was enlightened to see that their See Jungle track is a note for note cover of this. Both are excellent.
Muhsinah - Only and Always
Dreamy, woozy soul-pop from a young singer who has also sung with The Foreign Exchange.
The Fall - Senior Twilight Stock Replacer
Classic, driving, repetitive Fall. Always the same, always different.
Peter Broderick - A Glacier
From Float, one of his two albums from last year (also Home). Both of these albums have very much grown on me since I first heard them a month or so ago. Another strike for the excellent Bella Union label. See also Sara Lov below.
Sara Lov - Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming
From her new album of the same name. Clear voice with an interesting catch in it.
Oumou Sangare - Kounadya
One of my favourite tracks from her new album Seya. Very summery.
A Camp - Golden Teeth and Silver Medals
Another great Scandanavian pop album this time from ex-Cardigans Nina Persson. This track is a lushly produced duet with Nicolai Dunger.
