greatest "best of"s

I've been meaning to write this one for a while now!

1. The Smashing Pumpkins - Greatest Hits
for some reason, each song flows perfectly into the next, almost as if they were made to be a hits band. and I think that's true because, unfortunately, a lot of what billy corgan puts out is straight masturbation, because that's just the kind of guy he is. remember zwan?

2. The Smiths - The Sound of the Smiths
starts out perfectly with hand in glove, which has a soft beginning that gradually gets louder. apparently these songs were hand picked by morrissey and johnny marr… they're evidently very aware of best work.

3. A Tribe Called Quest - The Anthology
structured really well. doesn't blow it's load right away with "can I kick it?". everything's mixed up and it's got a great flow, perfect for listening to when you're walking around.

4. Beastie Boys - The Sounds of Science
got lots of extra good shit, which is why it beats out Solid Gold Hits. tons of remixes and bonus hard-to-find songs. what makes it extra special is that it manages to keep my attention despite being two hours long.

5. Joy Division - Heart and Soul
so much previously unreleased shit and raw material. this thing is huge, I don't think I've ever gotten through it in one sitting. I like it for its completion, plus it has the added benefit of including both unknown pleasures and closer. finally, everything is remastered. what more can you ask for?

6. Cap'n Jazz - Analphabetapolothology
k seriously, fuck the title. this is a great collection though. like heart and soul above, it's almost fully complete. cap'n jazz are great and I think a lot of the great mid-nineties emo bands should take a leaf out of their book and release all of their material. I hate to think how many gems have been lost in the annals of history because the guitarist is a stock broker and the vocalist is a teacher and they're all too lazy to fish out their old recordings and release them to all the foreveralone fans who are living (musically) in the age of dial-up.
