I'm finding that as I'm getting older, I'm becoming more broad in my musical taste, embracing styles and genres that do not fit in any of the sub-categories of hard rock. For example, I've recently become fond of Snow Patrol. While they can be classified as a pop-rock band, they are definitely not hard rock, metal, hardcore, or anything aggressive. I've also recently become very fond of Melody Gardot, Depeche Mode, and Moby, all artists who are nothing close to metal or hardcore.
