'Gonna take a miracle' – the album Laura Nyro made with the vocal trio Labelle was more than just a collection of tasteful cover versions. Even a cursory listen reveals the infectious almost teenage enthusiasm with which she tackles the mix of soul and doowop numbers. These songs meant a lot to her – maybe even sustained her while she was growing up.
'The Bells' is a naked declaration of love which Nyro sings with such unguarded desperation, that you really do believe her world will fall apart, if the object of her affections doesn't return her feelings. The backing vocals by Labelle build in the overwrought choruses, which drip with adolescent longing.
