I am about to admit the cardinal sin of Barenaked Ladies fans (or what I conceive as a cardinal sin of Barenaked Ladies fans). I got into the band because of Stunt. I hope the other fans out there will forgive me for this. Yes it was One Week, that was the first song to grace my ears as an acknowledged Barenaked Ladies song. Later I would discover that I had in fact heard If I had a $1,000,000 and even The Old Apartment prior to this, but it was "good 'ole" Stunt that popped my Barenaked Ladies Cherry.

We were in the van driving back to Fargo from Minneapolis in my undergrad days when If I Had a $1,000,000 came on the radio. It was one of my "more enlightened" music major friends (I was a Bio/Pre-vet major, but hung out with the music people because of my choir, band and drama influences from high school) confirmed that this was in fact a "Barenaked Ladies" tune. I had it on my list to hunt for more Barenaked Ladies music but hadn't yet. This however sealed the deal and brought me to true entrance for a perspective BNL fan: Gordon. Rock Spectacle and Born on a Pirate Ship weren't far behind.

This is where my love for the band truely began. Songs like Enid had me hooked on this band. Now I just can't get enough.

BNL is not a comedy band. They are respectable singer-songwriters that are working to change the face of music up in Canada and through the world. Their new album due out in September is produced on their own label. I've of course got my pre-order in.

BNL got me through some tough times. Too Little Too Late and Wrap Your Arms Around Me helped me rage and cry through a breakup, Falling for the First Time was a karaoke anthem during Veterinary school, letting me know that doing your best was all that mattered. In general the make me laugh, think, cry, and sing all at the same time.

I'm a Maroon fan. I think many BNL fans dismiss this album as not a very good offering, but it has some of my absolute favorite BNL tracks: Humor of the Situation, Falling for the First Time, Pinch Me, Two Little Too Late.

So there you have it, some thoughts, and heartfelt confession from a BNL fan. If you've come across here for a reason other than a fact that you're a BNL fan through journal connections, I hope you find some music and give them a try.
