One might think that electing a black man to the most powerful position on earth means that America's dark racist past is mostly over. But actor Morgan Freeman says otherwise. Last night, the Oscar winner appeared on CNN's Piers Morgan and declared that Obama's presidency had actually made racism even worse in the United States. But before all you liberals get your knickers in a twist, it's not Obama he blames. It's the Republicans. (So all you conservatives can get upset now.)
Freeman told Piers Morgan that the Tea Party, which controls the Republican party, cares more about getting a black man out of office than it does about the future of America.
He said:
Their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term. What’s, what does that, what underlies that? "Screw the country. We’re going to whatever we do to get this black man, we can, we’re going to do whatever we can to get this black man outta here."When Piers Morgan tried to point out that it could be more of a party thing than a racist thing and the Tea Party would be trying to get any Democrat out of office, Freeman stuck to his guns.
Well, it just shows the weak, dark, underside of America. We’re supposed to be better than that. We really are. That’s, that’s why all those people were in tears when Obama was elected president. 'Ah, look at what we are. Look at how, this is America.' You know? And then it just sort of started turning because these people surfaced like stirring up muddy water.There's no denying that Obama being elected is a sign of how far America has come, but that doesn't mean our country's racist days are over. Still, it's naive to think his presidency has made our country more racist. Racist Tea Party members would have been around even if lily white John McCain had been elected to the White House. The sad truth is that there are racists living in America and there probably always will be. Having a black president may have made them more vocal – and visible – but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It shows us how far we still have to go.
