I agree many Pink Floyd albums have some weak songs - I actually prefer their pre Dark Side of the Moon albums more. Van der Graaf seem interesting, I'll check them out. Never heard much about the italian prog scene - just read about it - another bunch of albums to check out - don't think I'll get to it soon. It's funny you mentioned 80's synth. When I think about it, I really don't listen to it much anymore - probably only Depeche Mode, early Gary Numan. I tend to listen to more of the early influencers from the 70's or the 80's influenced modern groups such as Ladytron and The Knife. Most 80's stuff I listen to tends to fit into the dark wave genre - dead can dance, clan of xymox, sisters of mercy etc (though when I think about it depeche Mode and Numan prob fit into that genre too. I think my 'synth pop' phase is clearly over.

Well I got as far as 'on the love beach, I'm gonna make love to you on the love beach...' - then I turned it off - so probably not a good idea :) I have listened to a fair bit of the prog bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, ELP, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull (don't take my listening totals too literally - I listen to a lot on Cd so obviously my plays don't get scrobbled). Out of all those bands I probably find Floyd / Gentle Giant even Brian Eno the most accessible. I'm actually really getting into the German prog rock scene from late 60's to mid 70's (or the Krautrock movement as the Brits termed it). Way more experimental and way influential on later ambient, electronic, industrial music - which is probably why I'm more drawn to it. You listened to any Can, Faust, Neu, Amon Duul, Ash ra Tempel, Tangerine Dream and early Kraftwerk? If not I've got some great albums to share with you when I get over to Canada.

You should forget the first two albums. Once they got Anneke van Giersbergen as the new vocalist they really came into their own. The first few albums from then on were goth / alternative metal (check out Mandylion and If Then Else). Their last two albums were more mellow alterantive rock (check out Home). Those three albums will give you a good idea of what they are like. Anneke is what makes The Gathering so good, she's an amazing vocalist.
