[101] The Electric Prunes – I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night) (1967)

The Electric PrunesI Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)

Sold, sold, sold to the highest bidder!
Going… going… going… gone!

This song (Sold to the highest bidder) has been in my head for the last couple of days. Don't listen to other people who tell you that I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night) is The Electric Prunes their biggest hit and the best song on the album, because they're wrong. The reason (and a very good one) you should listen to this album is Sold To The Highest Bidder. Of course I am always right.

So, this album… me like! It's got a lot of variation, and sure, sometimes you don't know if The Electric Prunes are serious or not (of course they're not) and sure, the best songs on this album aren't written by themselves: they needed two woman to do it for them. As I can only encourage this fact, I do not mind it that much, especially if Tucker & Mantz wrote songs like I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night), Are You Lovin' Me More (But Enjoying It Less), Sold To The Highest Bidder and Get Me To The World On Time.

Back to the variation: The Electric Prunes change with ease from pure psychedelic sounds to softer sweeter songs to childish songs. There's I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night) that has some psychedelic sounds (please, can someone tell me how they make that typical guitar sound, I just love it), there's Onie that resembles (yesyes) The Everly Brothers or even John Travolta's Sandy (from Grease), Are You Lovin' Me More (And Enjoying It Less) is a slower version of The Kaiser Chief's 'Everyday I Love You Less And Less', Sold To The Highest Bidder is a mixture of The Clash and The Dropkick Murphys (but a lot better than The Dropkick Murphys) and Luvin' is pure rock'n'roll.

Maybe this is a strange record just because of this constant change, but it makes it a very enjoyable record to listen to… what more do you need? Some songs (the ones noted before) are fabulous and I cannot help but loving this album.

So, excuse me now, I have a song to sing…:
Sold, sold, sold to the highest bidder!
Going… going… going… gone!

(Fantastisch: I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night), Are You Lovin' Me More (But Enjoying It Less), Sold To The Highest Bidder, Get Me To The World On Time, Luvin')

Going… going… going…
gone!
