Sun Ra might indeed be a difficulut artist due to his huge catalogue. I guess it is a slow process of discovery and of one's own taste. I would say there are two approaches, either dive in head first into the chaos and start with albums like Space is the Place or Solar Myth approach 2, or start slowly with his more calm early and later work like Sound of Joy and Mayan Temples, or with Lanquidity. Good luck and fun!

Folk rock. I wouldn't say I'm a fan of it except that I enjoy the songs I grew up with. Creedence Clearwater Revival, Alabama, that sort of thing. I'm really enjoying the blues rock revival lately with bands like Rival Sons, who sound like Led Zeppelin reincarnated, and The Black Keys, along with Mute Math. Manchester Orchestra is pretty awesome as well. If you like folk though and some acoustic, I might recommend Daisy McCrackin in addition to the bands I mentioned before.

That was my first time hearing Grizzly Bear. Last.fm is great for new music in that way. It was early morning and I wanted "soothing" radio, so they came up. Normally I might listen to Band of Horses for something on the mellow side. You know who has a really nice sound though is Victoria Hume. Sort of folksy and poetic.

Ok, this is effectively just going to be a list, because I'm currently waiting for my bike to be delivered. =P Including the bands I mentioned previously, in terms of 'proper' prog rock and similar, I'm a fan of Yes, Captain Beefheart, King Crimson, Can, ELO and Alan Parson's Project. I'd also count some of Toto in there, too. Towards the more metal end of the spectrum I'm a huge fan of Tool and also like Queensryche, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, A Perfect Circle and Kyuss. I'm also a big fan of some of the classic progressive dance acts; I'd class groups like Portishead and Massive Attack here, and artists such as Robert Miles and 808 State. In terms of DJs I'm a fan of, Tiësto, Paul van Dyk, Sasha and Deadmau5 would all be on the list, and some of Moby and Prodigy's stuff would definitely be in there too (I'm a fan of both in general). Of that little lot, I think you might enjoy Kyuss the most if you've never listened before, they were Josh Homme's first band. There we go...phew! =D

You know, I keep coming back to this question and it stymies me each time. =P I guess part of the problem is, what do you classify as prog, apart from the obvious pioneers? I listen to a few artists that have progressive elements involved in the music, in many different genres...it sounds a bit like a cop-out but I promise that it isn't!

I think my first Kurt Vonnegut book was Cat's Cradle, and I would definitely recommend that for a start. But, Slaughter House Five is good, of course. Well, Murakami is kind of a romantic post-modernist which I really like. Plath's poetry is just beautiful, I don't even know what to do with her. Fitzgerald is a classic, very romantic, a lot of dialogue between people who are looking for something. Vonnegut is hilarious. I don't know what to say about Updike, I just really like him. Then Miranda July uses very interesting stories to get at lifes big questions. That's the most I can say really.

(this has taken me too long, you have likely forgotten all context for what i might say, for this, my apologies) i love tommy johnson because his voice is beautiful and awkward and sad and funny at once. recently my country blues favorites have been.. mississippi john hurt for his warmth, bukka white for his .. resilience, and sleepy john estes for his confidence and understanding. odetta is also worth a mention. she is powerful. do you mind if i ask why you don't have charts? i'm going mad with curiosity

I do like me a bit of prog, yes! Early Genesis and Peter Gabriel, Rush, Pink Floyd being the obvious ones but prog-metal, specifically acoustic, is where my real interest lies. Isis, Pelican and Animals As Leaders are three favourites, and I think some of Opeth's work would qualify too. And thanks for the positivity! =)

Yea, history definitely helps to figure out complicated things such as politics. I'm just gonna name some authors so bare with me: Haruki Murakami, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sylvia Plath, John Updike, Kurt Vonnegut, Miranda July and probably more but that's fine. How about you?

Weird, I have never had any desire to find out about transport networks but oh well. I guess it makes sense with your interests in politics, history, and geography. Other interests? What's that? Well, I study history but I think I use history mostly to get a background on culture's so I can find out more about the people and their preferences. Also, I read a lot of fiction but that's kind of the same category as film and music. Yea, I just found him the other day and he is quite good. There is a record, "Roy and Diz" which is both of them. I thought I found it online but I was incorrect.

Well, I think it's interesting that you find that interesting. What about administrative divisions do you find interesting? You're not supposed to tell me you forgot about me, if I had feelings they would be hurt. But yea it's fine.

Riding a bike is easy...it's not crashing into stuff that's the tricky part. =P I trust you're well? My first week at work has officially been most excellent, culminating in an expensed booze-up last night! Fair knackered though, I appear to have forgotten what this work malarkey is actually like, and I had a long weekend previously back at home with friends, which is four hours each way. A nice four-day weekend and a four-day week though to ease myself back in with!

I think people like to have something or someone to look up to and if it wasn't America it would be some other place, China. I personally think everyone should like America though and I clearly have no bias. Ok, well that's where I live. Yea, that makes sense I just wasn't sure. What do you mean administrative divisions? Uhh, not really. I saw a comedian, Maria Bamford look here up if you don't know her, and I had class till 7 so I didn't really have a lot of time to party.

It's alright, we all know the real center of the universe is the U.S. so it's fine. Ok, Edinburgh is one of the two or three places I know in Scotland because a lot of smart people are from there and it has a good college. It sounds like a pretty interesting landscape at least, gives you things to think about. I am from Georgia, which is in the South, right above Florida, if you don't know. I really have no idea how much knowledge you may have of our geography. Yea, my birthday was last Monday. I'm no longer a teenager now, it's a nice feeling.

Live music is pretty great. It's usually worth it and more for whatever trouble you may have. Plus, it depends on the band. Sometimes crowds are going to attack you but most shows I go to everyone keeps their own space bubble. I apologize for my American foolishness, I assumed you lived in England but U.K doesn't really mean that. What part of the U.K are you from? Yea, that's pretty nice. I would usually do that but I feel like challenging myself more which is challenging.

Watching those movies can only make you a better person. I don't know how much better but better. Uhh, I don't know. I'm not going to many shows except for St. Vincent in May. I haven't seen her in over two years so I'm pretty excited. Besides that my semester is finishing up so I have many work and I'm looking for an apartment. How about you?

No I haven't, but it fer sure intrigues me. I love anything that has that 'old world' feel and charm to it. And yeah it is def pretty here. The country-side can be from one extreme to the next. It's very rugged yet very mellow & so is the weather, lol. But there are a lot of very clear brilliant blue sky days! : )

Cheers, it actually feels quite good, warm and fuzzy to be using my skills to foil the 'capitalist pigs' that I was working for only a couple of years ago. =P I was never into running either, but since I was diagnosed with diabetes I needed something a bit more focussed, exercise-wise. I've been doing my own variation on the 'Couch to 5km' programme, so lots of interval training basically; quite a gentle introduction in many ways. A friend of mine has gone from doing no exercise at all to running a half marathon in nine months! Yeah, English at A-level was as far as I ever wanted to take it; too airy-fairy and existential, both for language and literature, beyond a certain point. I have two friends though that are doing PhD's in it though, so clearly some people enjoy it! ;)

Well, I definitely recommend it then. The soundtrack has my bloody valentine and the jesus and mary chain on it but it's also an excellent movie. Yea, I would agree that his earlier stuff is better but when I have to pick an album, hands down what's goin on. Otis Redding is the man. Try a little tenderness is one of my favorite songs. Stevie Wonder is good at music so it's hard to pick from his albums. The stop motion you saw is probably from Baby Snakes but you should definitely watch all of it. It's really strange but it's Frank Zappa so it's awesome.

Thanks! Yeah those musical choices were greatly influenced by my two older brothers. I don't really have a fave album by either of them, I usually just pick and choose specific fave songs. I'm addicted to a few of Led Zep's, lol. Although Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' is prolly my fave by them...I see you like some of the older 'quality' stuff. Nice! : ))

All of the things you mentioned are good things. I like the Smiths although not as much as most people, most people seem to be really into them. Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, and the Jesus and Mary Chain are all cool. Have you seen Lost in Translation? Double Nickels on the Dime is definitely one of the best post-punk albums ever. Well, for Marvin Gaye I have to say What's Going On is my favorite but I really like United as well and basically all of his stuff. MY favorite Stevie Wonder album is probably My Cherie Amour, also Innvervisions and the Jazz Soul of little Stevie Wonder. Yea, I love Hots Rats as well. I definitely like his Mothers stuff but not as much as his solo stuff. Have you seen Baby Snakes? That's a weird movie.

Yea, that makes sense, I forget people don't know everything I know. Yea, I mean I like some of everything and it seems as though you do as well. What do you define as 80s alt rock as opposed to Post-Punk? It seems like most good rock in the 80s was post-punk. As for post-punk I really like Minutemen, Sonic Youth, and Joy Division. It seems like most people don't really like the Minutemen, which I find weird. Robert Johnson has that one song, Dead Shrimp Blues I think, "I woke up one morning and all my shrimp were dead and gone" that's good stuff. I love 60s/70s R&B, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Stevie Wonder. I like Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa is the man. I don't know how many times I've listened to Apostrophe.

I have to get everything if I really enjoy but otherwise I can stop. For whatever reason collecting is fun. I feel like Jelly Roll is pretty well known but maybe that's just me. I'm definitely taking notes because you know it all. I really couldn't say what my favorites are I just listen to him and it's good. You're gonna make me delve into the world of jazz, possibly to never return again. What else are you big into besides what we've already discussed. I'm not trying to stop you from talking about jazz, please tell me all you know, I'm just interested to know.

I've been pimping myself as much as possible to potential employers, sending speculative CVs and meeting people I have worked with before. No joy yet but I'll keep plugging away. I've also been making a nuisance of myself at the planning department of my district council, getting involved against dastardly developers on my estate. I've been getting back into running too; I'm sure I've provided the college students I pass every morning much amusement as I huff and puff along the guided busway. =P What are you studying?

Jacksonville (Florida, about 4 hours north). It ended up being pretty cool, the bands we played with were super nice guys, everyone had a good time.
