It is that time again and here is the updated Stairway List for 2012.
When i started this list, i thought that the most played track of all time is Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. While is still think thats true, with decades of radio airplay and home plays on vinyl back in the day, nowadays we have a much better understanding of what people are listening to with the help of last.fm.
Since this is an all time list, there is not that much change, but Coldplay did manage to gain two places and is now right behind the ever so strong Mr. Brightside - that Killers uber-track that combines 11 million plays on last.fm now. The other Coldplay tracks manage to gain abit too. Most surprising to me was Kesha's Tik Tok, which i thought was a one hit wonder thing that would burn out fast. But she held her ground and only dipped slightly from last years position. The only new track is Lady Gaga's Alejandro, that just didn't make last years list.
To get onto this list a track had to beat Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven which clocks in at 6.633.312 plays today - and 42 tracks managed to do that, so here they are: the most played tracks of all time on last.fm.

I started this list in mid 2007 and was amazed and insanely happy that back then The Postal Service managed to hold the number one spot with their wonderful Such Great Heights (that is still in the list at position 31). Then all the stairway list tracks combined totaled at under 50 million plays - now it is 350 million. And while this is still gaining, it seems we are slowly reaching a peak here.
