It's called that, because you listen to it with your BRAIN (or INTELLIGENCE, see?) rather than with, like, your body. I like the term Braindance a lot more, it wouldn't spawn as many idiots as there are in the comment section, but I don't think it sounds like a genre name as much, you know? By "Intelligent Dance Music" you're implying it's dance music, so you get a feel for what the music would sound like.

"Intelligent dance music sounds really cheesy to me, its a term that not even the musicians from the “genre” like or think it describes them, it sounds as bad as vaporwave to me. If anything I prefer Braindance because it doesn’t sound conceited and I think I’ve read that Aphex Twin and others use the term. Or I just label it as experimental electronic music or whatever genre is the most similar to the music and thats it. The fact that says “intelligent” kinda puts me off like is it more intelligent than other music or what?" - Richard D. James (Aphex Twin)

I see it more as an Ironical term, to descirbe something that is extremly complex with the "cheesiest" term possible

This tag is the worst thing ever invented related to electronic music, and it's used to describe the music that I love more

In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my intelligent dance music taste.

Why do you even compare them? Metal is a HUGE genre consisting of many subgenres while IDM is a subgenre of electronic dance music which is in turn a just a part of the more broad term "electronic music". As a result, comparing metal with electronic music I wouldn't say the latter is as cancerous as the former. Nothing can compete with metal in that regard imo.

Love the music, hate the genre name. Smacks of elitism. [2] Most genre names and tags are bullshit tbh.
