I see that there is some confusion about grunge bands on here, so i have made a list to my knowledge about the genre. It may not be a hundred per cent accurate, but as far as i know it's mostly correct. {Grunge} Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Hole, Mudhoney, Screaming Tree's, Melvins, L7, TOTD, Mad Season, MLB, Candlebox, Babes in Toyland, Blind Melon, Green River, Tad, Love Battery, Paw, 7 Year Bitch, Gruntruck, Malfunkshun, Hammerbox, Skin Yard, Truly, Fecal Matter, My Sisters Machine, Umen. {Post-grunge} Foo Fighters, Bush, Silverchair, Puddle of Mudd, Seether, Audioslave, Creed, Local H, Everclear, Nickleback, Collective Soul, Veruca Salt, QOTSA, BSC. Daisy Chainsaw, Fastbacks, The Gits, Blink 182, and Garbage are punk. The Smashing Pumpkins, Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, and Janes Addiction are alt rock bands who get easily mistaken as Grunge. All the rest are unknown to me, but most of them can be classed as either alt rock, or post grunge.

Mark Arm, the vocalist for Mudhoney—is generally credited as being the first to use the term grunge to describe this genre of music. Arm first used the term in 1981, when he wrote a letter to the Seattle zine Desperate Times, criticizing his band Mr. Epp and the Calculations as "Pure grunge! Pure noise! Pure shit!" Clark Humphrey, editor of Desperate Times, cites this as the earliest use of the term to refer to a Seattle band, and mentions that Bruce Pavitt of Sub Pop popularized the term as a musical label in 1987–88, using it on several occasions to describe Green River.Arm said years later, "Obviously, I didn't make grunge up. I got it from someone else. The term was already being thrown around in Australia in the mid-'80s to describe bands like King Snake Roost, The Scientists, Salamander Jim, and Beasts of Bourbon."Arm used grunge as a descriptive term rather than a genre term, but it eventually came to describe the punk/metal hybrid sound of the Seattle music scene.

In my somewhat educated opinion of grunge music, I consider grunge to be a scene during the late 1980's and early 90's in Seattle where bands primarily played rock music. I wouldn't consider bands like STP and Bush to be grunge to be grunge because they weren't from Seattle, therefore not part of the scene.
