RIP ... It would have been the 76th birthday of Peter Tosh today... We still think of you!

I've talked with folks at Last.fm about this. They told me to "vote" for the proper name, which is not a great response when the problem is not two bands with the same name, but two *different* bands with...wait for it...two *different* names. I still don't know why the scrobbler gets them confused.

To be fair, it's not a wholly retroactive practice. Lee Perry did it with Soul Rebels and Soul Revolution in the early 70s, pre-Island. I know Bunny and Peter weren't too happy with that, which is entirely reasonable.

I'm not really mad about it. I just dislike renaming bands retroactively for various reasons. I feel it diminishes Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer's key involvement in the original setup. Also, it's revisionist so you're rewriting a part of history that may be lost or in danger thereof. The Wailers existed for a decade before their breakup so renaming puts everything under the umbrella of Bob Marley (the brand). It's comparable to attributing all Jackson 5 albums to "Michael Jackson and the Jackson 4". And yeah, labels are here to make money. But commercialising Bob by turning him into a brand that can be slapped on sneakers I daresay you strangle the revolutionary, religious, empowering, and emancipatory aspects of his (and by implication the early Wailers albums his name is now slapped on too) music.

it is smart for a record label to label everything "bob marley" they are in the business of MAKING MONEY...how can u be mad at that? they are not in the business of making music...artists are. and to label everything bob marley also brings the wailers more exposure many ppl know bob....fewer know the wailers...so in essence...the wailers gain fans from this as well....everyone wins....the "business" side makes more money...the music doesn't change and the fanbase grows as some familiar with bob...are now enlightened to what the wailers brought to the table....why u gotta hate?

Anything that came out before Natty Dread should be labeled The Wailers, He didn't start recording under the name Bob Marley and the Wailers till Peter and Bunny left the group. [4] Agreed, trouble is that Island Records, the Marley Estate, and every other label and its grandmother want to capitalize by slapping 'Bob Marley' on every release Bob was near. Because shoes and coffee mugs simply don't cut it.

"SIXTIES TEENAGE GARAGE PUNKS, WHERE ARE THEY??!!!" The "reggae crud" Wailers is infinitely more popular than your beloved, obscure, whitey-anonymous one. Shocking isn't it?

There's a major mislabeling of Bob Marley tunes: anything after 1974 (Natty Dread) is Bob Marley & The Wailers. anything before 1973 (Burnin') is The Wailers. Remember, he never recorded under "Bob Marley".
