Brytyjski zespół doom/gothic metalowy z Halifax, założony w 1988 roku. Wymieniany obok Anathemy i My Dying Bride jako pionier gatunku „death/doom metal”.

Paradise Lost są w zasadzie nieznani w swoim rodzimym kraju, lecz przez wiele lat byli bardzo popularni w wielu krajach Europy - zwłaszcza w Grecji i Niemczech, gdzie osiągnęli status metalowej supergwiazdy. Mimo, iż na ogół nazywa się ich twórcami gothic metalu, w trakcie kariery wiele razy szli w dalekie od metalu kierunki, często eksperymentując i pracując z producentami parającymi się zupełnie innymi gatunkami muzycznymi.

Dla przykładu Nick Holmes używał w początkach kariery ciężkiego, deathowego growlu (albumy „Lost Paradise” (1990), „Gothic” (1991)). Na płytach „Shades Of God” oraz „Draconian Times” śpiewał już czyściej, nieraz zbliżając się do maniery Jamesa Hetfielda z Metalliki. Z kolei na „One Second” czy „Host” zespół próbował sił w elektronice a’la Depeche Mode, co zraziło wielu starych fanów, ale i przysporzyło całkiem sporą rzeszę nowych.

Skład zespołu: Nick Holmes (wokal), Greg Mackintosh i Aaron Aedy (gitary) oraz Steve Edmonson (bas). Holmes i Machkintosh pełnią również rolę głównych kompozytorów - prawie wszystkie utwory zespołu podpisane są ich nazwiskami. Jedynie pozycja perkusisty zmieniała się na przestrzeni lat: Matthew Archer opuścił zespół w 1994 roku - zastąpił go na tym miejscu Lee Morris. Jednak również on opuścił grupę, w marcu 2004 roku. Kolejnym perkusistą był Jeff Singer, lecz w 2008 roku podzielił los poprzednika. Niecałe pół roku później (za sprawą Jeffa Walkera) na stałe dołączył do zespołu Adrian Erlandsson, wieloletni fan zespołu, który gra(ł) także w kapelach Brujeria, Cradle Of Filth, At The Gates i innych.

    You've got in your library Paradise Lost and In Requiem so you obiously didn't like it but you didn't check Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us out, did you? If you like first five albums you might like FDU-DUU too.

    Besides it was not me claiming any band to have single handedly creating death/doom. It was the other guy saying that Paradise Lost almost single handedly created it.

    Dream Death had a full length out in 1987. Also, that's just my opinion about the album cover, I don't mind it if others like it, but it just looks like an attempt to make Icon look "cooler" or "better"

    I checked out Winter and Dream Death, both released first demos in late 80s as Paradise Lost did. I bet doom/death was created by a few different bands independently. Back to the album artwork discussion - cover is NOT wannabe Icon. It is an awesome piece of art refering to the style of the beginning of XX century. I fucking adore it, howgh! :D

    I don't give a single fuck about death metal, it's not my genre. And yes, I've never heard of Dream Death or Winter but who said there must be only one founder of each genre? Creating death/doom and every other type of music was not a single moment but a process, wasn't it?

    Well, PL are one of the creators of death/doom :P And they are one of the very few bands playing gothic metal without being pussies.

    @cavaleramax Well no shit they're going to sound similar to Sisters of Mercy. SoM is one of Paradise Lost's biggest inspirations. PL even did a cover of "Walk Away" on one of their EP's. PL have never ripped anybody off, it's only natural that a band will, at times, sound similar to an older band that helped shape their sound. Besides, they almost single-handedly created two entire subgenres of metal, so accusing them of ripping another band off is pretty baseless.

    As much as as I love this band they rip Sisters Of Mercy off so badly listen to the intro to yearn for change and then listen to nine while nine by the sisters of mercy. Complete rip off and the rest of Draconian all sound heavily inspired by Sisters of Mercy's debut album First And Last And Always. Paradise Lost of still brilliant but when I realised this I lost some respect for them
