At the Gates - szwedzka grupa muzyczna wykonujaca Melodic death metal, znana jako prekursor gatunku. Powstala 1990 roku w mieście Göteborg. Grupa została rozwiązana w 1996. W październiku 2007 roku grupa jednak ogłosiła, że planuje trasę koncertową na 2008 rok.
21 września 2008 roku grupa zagrała ostatni koncert w Atenach, po którym została ponownie rozwiązana.
W grudniu 2010 zespół ogłosił ponowną reaktywację.

Kreator's last albums has been leading into melodic death metal, so, i guess is no surprise they sound a bit like the thrashier band on the old melodeath scene. That's good, by the way.

Yeah, the production is mehish, but the song-writing is great Actually it depends from what you play it. I listened to some songs today at school in a complete silense through my headphones. I was blown away. Raped By the Light of Christ is so fucking good.

"Slumber of Sullen Eyes." I don't hear any melodic death in old school Finndeath at all, except for maybe Sentenced, and certainly no gothenburg. The finns were a lot more focused on odd-time signatures and dissonance than the swedes, who were more focused on melody, groove, and catchy songwriting.

cool discussion, I guess you can indeed say Necrotism was en route to melodic death but I'd still say it's more firmly rooted in death metal... if ya wanna pull for another try Slumber of Sullen Eyes from 1992 along with TRITSIO [although I'd say With Fear is a lot more the standard type melodic death metal... it's still deathy but nonetheless melodic and also the well known pedal tone's widely prominent in much of the album] and well.. as for Slumber all that lead guitar work it's Death Metal with melody but certainly more applicable than Necrotism IMO
