WE are blessed that these old tracks are still available and that a lot of time and energy is being spent to clean them up so we can enjoy them the way they were meant to be heard. Tom Parker was a shyster of the first degree, even Elvis suffered at his hands - 31 films between 1956 and 1969 that killed his music career. The one thing that saved him was the Elvis '68 Comeback Special with D.J. Fontana, Charlie Hodge and Scotty Moore (his original back-up trio) and no shmaltzy movie songs. It showed that he could at least still rock out when he wanted to. My big annoyance is people who continue to call Elvis the King of Rock & Roll. He may have opened the door somewhat with some of his covers, (That's All Right, an awful Hound Dog and Carl Perkins' Blue Suede Shoes) but a lot of his songs like Heartbreak Hotel were written for him (by Mae Axton (Hoyt's mother), Tommy Durden and Elvis) but to my mind Chuck Berry was and is the King of Rock & Roll playing that 3 chord trick.

Simple Sweet Perfect Blues. The criminal Tom Parker owed Big Boy $$$, Elvis owed him respect and he gave it.

Fine cut - Elvis's too - just wanted to say Rod Stewart's version on "Every Picture Tells a Story" has to be considered - it's magnificent, too...

last.fm has brought me back to this, and this now seems to be the original. This was a decent, but not outstanding track, However, it is of immense historical importance, thanks to the pioneering Elvis cover.

Crudup's original has to have been better than this. The guitar accompaniment is very weak. Crudup wasn't one of the great Blues artists, but he was in the right place at the right time - and he was good enough to inspire the young Elvis - this being the track which Elvis jammed on, providing Sam Philips with the first hit from a White guy who could sing black music (Sam's dream). This was the song which, through Elvis' cover, ushered in the white Rock and Roll revolution.
