production on the new record kicks it. i was always baffled by how sideshow symphonies sounds like it was recorded underwater and this is just really lovely. not as ear-piercingly sharp as masquerade/sham mirrors and not totally fuzzed out either, i dig

@Desroth Garm is weak, God! he was awful on La Masquerade Infernale and of course good on The Sham Mirrors. ICS Guest Vocals on The Chaos Path was awesome, Garms crap ruined it..

The Mix of the new album is awesome, listen to them with some real good headphones (Audio Technica).

lol @ "maybe you just need a good pair of headphones for this album" - I guess I'll return my skullcandy earbuds then, the man at the best buy assured me they were good for the metal music. I'm sure the mix is a conscious aesthetic but so what, I still think it's really bad.

( Also : watch out for the new Fleurety album in 2016. Another example of an old "avant" band still having the 1995 appetite for pushing their boundaries. )

It makes "Arcturian" the first Arcturus album with nothing new (except the awfulness of "Warp"). "Sideshow", even if it's inferior to the prior albums, had the "oh, they're still trying to reinvent themselves" effect. I think almost all the tracks have nods to the prior albums. It's problematic, really. Anyway, I prefer having a new Arcturus album full of rehash, than no Arcturus at all, to quote a good friend of mine. They're just old men now. The old guard. It's a bit sad. Compare to Dodheimsgard's "A Umbra Omega". Now that's an entity still kicking and trying to reinvent themselves. (Well, there's an awful amount of nods in this album as well though) Arcturus used to be like Dodheimsgard. I hope the juice will come back but highly doubt it. Ah. "Archer" rules so much, though. And "Bane".

The nods to old tracks are exactly one of the things I think makes this album work so well; it provides a sense of continuity to the band’s discography that I felt was kind of lacking on Sideshow. None of the tracks are straight–up ripoffs of earlier pieces; I mean, sure, the opening of “Bane” sounds like “The Chaos Path” or any of a dozen other parallels I could name, but all of them change radically enough in direction that you can’t compare any one track in its entirety to any earlier track in its entirety. And that’s one of the things that I think works so well about this album: like the best of their earlier work, it’s not predictable at all. There are more musical ideas crammed into most five–minute songs on this album than lesser bands put into entire albums. Every time I’ve gone back to this album so far (about ten times so far) I’ve discovered something new and I expect to keep discovering new things for dozens more listens. To me, that’s a hallmark of a great album.

I dont see anything wrong with this mix. Fun fact : last time, the "Constellation" EP was next on my playlist, and it fits surprisingly well with "Arcturian", mix-wise. Which is, awesome. The real problem with this album, besides the (very) weak tracks like "Warp", "Demon" or "Crashland", is the awful amount of rehash. I dont think there's a single track without HUGE nods to older tracks. It's distracting at best, embarrassing at worse. BUT, this album have some REALLY strong tracks : "Pale", "Bane" and (my favorite) "Archer". And a enormous dose of respect for their older works, and by extension, for us Arcturus fanatics, with our expectations.

Try as I might I'm still struggling to figure out what's worse about the mix on this album than the mix on, say, The Sham Mirrors. Maybe you just need a good pair of headphones for this album. It's definitely not like, say, the original mix of Scenes from Hell where there isn't much instrumental clarity I also have to agree with Eospag that the album wouldn't really have been any better with Garm replacing Vortex (although an entire album with both of them on lead might have been). Vortex is quite a capable and versatile vocalist in his own right.
