Suomi means Finland in finnish language, and you wouldn't be wrong to assume that most Suomi metal bands come from this country. These bands are listed everywhere as 'Gothic', which is not entirely suitable (especially for bands like Sentenced or Lullacry, who have very little to do with anything gothic) - hence the need for the new term for a quite distinctive subgenre.

What characterizes Suomi metal is a melancholic (but not dark) atmosphere, low-pitched clean and very emotional vocals (usually male) and hard-rock/traditional heavy metal based guitar riffs. The last characteristic is probably the biggest distinction from Gothic metal, as well as the lack of connections to Gothic music (apart from imagery and atmosphere). There are a lot of fast-paced songs, with dynamic riffs and catchy choruses, which is also not very common in Gothic metal.

Sentenced were the first to set the path for the new genre when they went for a more melodic approach after releasing a couple of Death metal albums. They were soon followed by Charon, Entwine and HIM - and after the international success of the latter the new trend was born in Finland, with new Suomi bands appearing on a regular basis and usually getting big, thanks to the radio-friendly sound and catchy tunes. In fact, many Suomi metal bands, like HIM or Negative, borderline pop-rock, and whether they're a part of the metal scene is highly debatable.
