Opis:
A group for those who are interested in or follow some version of the paleolithic lifestyle.

While 'the paleo diet' sounds like a bit of a cop-out, this movement stands for more than just one interpretation of ancestral eating. Each individual will tweak the lifestyle to their own needs, but if we had to define it, it might look something like this:

It is not a low-carb or weight loss diet, although it can be those things. Rather, it comes from the perspective that food is healing, and that whole foods akin to what our ancestors have evolved to consume (or consumed to evolve!) are most appropriate for our current physiology. Foods like grains, legumes and sugars are powerful contributors to countless modern chronic diseases.

The reason I personally think paleo is awesome is, aside from it helping me regulate my hormones, return my appetite and lust for life, it pokes the holes in common dietary wisdom. Perhaps it isn't just as simple as thermodynamics, calories in/out at play. This removes the awful stigma of fat being associated with slothfulness, or gluttony. Think of it more as your food supply and current lifestyle demands forming the perfect storm to mess up your hunger hormones and desire to live life to the fullest, pestered chronically by bowel irritation, low mood/depression, poor sleep, etc (or far worse, especially down the road). What we take to be part of normal life may in fact be the effects of overconsumption of unstable vegetable oils promoting inflammation, poor quality meats, and a terrible overconsumption of sugar, especially when opting for 'low fat' varieties.

I'm actually tempted to get rid of that food pyramid because it makes less sense to me now that any of these food groups should be moderated. I too have been eating more and more milk, fruit, cheese and even dates (gasp!) and feeling fantastic for it, much better than I did following the traditional paleo framework! I like the philosphy behind it all, but I think there is more to healthy eating than strict paleo can communicate.

my pleasure. as for the coinage, I must point out it's not my own but rather that of dr. Kurt Harris, whose blog title (Archevore) and various posts and comments attest to his flair for that sort of thing.

Good points there swevens. There seems to be a movement towards enjoying grains prepared in ways totally different to the kinds we find in supermarkets. I personally believe grains are not necessary foods at all and many of the modern processed varieties do more harm than good - but I suspect that in the presence of a nutritious diet white rices and sourdough breads would be benign. If I had access to raw, whole milk I would like to experiment with dairy, but as it is I only consume ghee and butter. 'Macronutrient-agnosticism' is a wonderful term you've coined! In my own experience, I required a period of low carb eating to wean myself off of sugar, regulate my hunger signals, sleep and mood. After that it seems easier to consume starches and fruits without the awful after-effects. I will add your sources to the group description. Thanks for your input!

True story: the guy who designed the present food pyramid would these days make sweet fruit and carbohydrate the base, minimize the presence of animal products, and probably nix the complete proscription on grains as well. As for me, as a matter of convenience and personal taste I tend toward a pretty high-carb, milk-friendly, macronutrient-agnostic take on things. In other words, our host isn't kidding she points out that there is a lot of room for variation in Paleo. Finally, in addition to the above mentioned resources, I recommend Archevore & Perfect Health Diet.
