What certain genre would you say has the most snobbish fans?

Of course, this is all opinion and I in no way mean to generalize.
For me, I think it's the fans of Classic Rock. A lot of them have the thought process of, "Led Zeppelin is the greatest band ever, if you don't like them then your music taste sucks".

    What do you think? Thoughts?

  • I'd say metal because whenever a metal head listens to any other genre, he (and it's usually a he) often refers to it as a guilty pleasure, even when the artist is extremely talented.

(BTW, I'm not saying all metalheads are that way. My husband is a metal head but he also likes alternative and rap, among other genres.)

That guinea pig in my avatar? His name is Benny.
  • i'd have to go with electro and Drum n base & even the indie rockers

METAL. Most hate-groups on last.fm got metal in the charts. It's a very disturbing fact if you ask me.

  • I think that, no matter what genre you look at, you'll find music snobs. There'll be metalheads who only like a certain type of metal and nothing else, indie kids who hate all that is popular, hip hop snobs who only like underground rap with lyrics that are intelligent to them, classic rockers who'll spit on anything new, and the list goes on.

To be quite honest, the only snob I haven't encountered is a pop or country one.

Yeah, there's no genre which doens't have some snobs. So it's not the question of the genre, rather the attitude of the listener.

True, but I just wanted to see what everyone thought and from experiences.

I'd go with metal just because snobby metal fans are fairly large in number (obligatory disclaimer: non-snobby metal fans are larger in number I know). I've encountered many of them on general music forums, sometimes Jonas Brothers videos, etc. I think if you did a pie chart of music snobs and the genres they liked, metal fans would probably take up a decent percentage compared to everyone else (I'll just throw 20% out there). It's true there are a lot of classic rock and indie snobs too. They'd be decent contenders for 2nd and 3rd, I think.

Some snobs can be more obnoxious than others, though, regardless of how many of them there are in those genres. I've encountered some REALLY annoying jazz snobs, for instance.

Classic rock - because they cant figure out whats this century is ahaha...

Metal and variants - because theyre so bad, they cant listen any other music thats not from hell.. but cmon, some of theyre lyrics are often more gay than any pop!!

Rap - Theyre from the street, theyre rude and bully ones that cant be nice with anyone different

Pop - If you listen anything with a scream, damn you have problems... same if you like a band that really know how to play an instrument and not just show his/her pretty face

Well in my own experience, that are the genres more conflictious and my experience with snob people and theyre reasons =)

Metal, definitely. They think, just because they listen metal music, they are higher than other.
Metal is not the only type of music that is good. There are other types of music that are good too!

Many people don't like my taste of music, but that's okay, as lang as they don't call it "worthless", "rubbish" or "music for stupid people."

In the majority of cases things like that can be heard from listeners of metal.

[Of course not all metalheads snobb other music, and of course also listeners of other genres snobb other music ... ]

I just wanna' tell my very own experience. :(

  • Blakk krieg frostbitten metal. Or for those who don't know it - black metal :P (which is not a bad genre, btw..)

  • I find that hard to pin down, I know a lot of snobby people who are across a lot of genres. I find that personally the indie rockers dont tend to be as snobby and keep to themselves, but I agree there are a lot of metal heads who are snobby to the max (a few have personalities that really rub me the wrong way) and they dont appear open to any music regardless of the talent in it unless its "brutal".

Ive noticed that the older the snobbier too in some genres where people really look down their noses at newer music.

    Forever X!

I read the title of this group and immediately thought "metal" . And it appears that my snap judgement coincides with everybody else. Once upon a time i was a metal boy only. I considered all other types of music was played by less talented musicians. I was very very wrong

  • Speaking as someone who listens to metal, it has to be metallers. In my 20 years of listening to the music I've found fellow metallers can be quite snobbish.

    Don't need no super heros
    Don't need no movie stars
    Don't need no politicians

    Don't need no preacher

Yes, definitely. Black metal easily has the biggest snobs of any genre of music.
They even get picky with what's 'depressive black metal' and what's 'melancholic black metal', etc. XD

I love black metal.... but I love LOTS of other genres, too.

...Without music, life would be a mistake...

    Metal and maybe Indie

  • Post-punk, 70's glam... They usually can't stand any metal or whatever... and the other side is, surprise, metal and metal fans.

And indie and classic rock too.

You won't feel like a stranger,
    You've found a second home.
You can get out of your tree there,
When that music hits your soul.
    Bye-bye Big Brother,
    'Cause I'm going away,
I wanna listen to the man,
    They call Clifton Chenier.

    - Rory Gallagher
  • Definitely metal. A lot of metalheads are so uptight about whether or not people listen to "true" metal. It's ridiculous. I've come across so many snobby metalheads in my lifetime because of the music I listen to. Every genre has its snobs, but I think metal has the most rude ones.

  • Hi all! I don't know which genre has the snobbiest listeners. Luckily the nice and positive listeners outnumber the negative ones. My view is that you should never comment on what you don't like. Only focus and comment on what you do like. Right now, I would like to walk along a sunny beach. :P

  • Tough decision between extremist, pseudo-alternative culturettes ("omg I soooo luv Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan <3 Muse is not real music =X"), classic rock fanbrats ("how dare you talk about music to me? You don't know music! You can't even appreciate the true beauty of a David Gilmour guitar solo?") or close-minded constipated metaheads ("lol britney sucks lol radiohead sucks lol television sucks lol METAL 4EVER \,,/").

I think I'll choose close-minded constipated metalheads, though, As said, they are snobs even with OTHER metalheads and metal bands because they are "not true" and "sellouts". @___@

You can always swap "metalheads" with "hip-hop preaching worshippers". They, too, believe to hold the undeniable truth about "true rap/hip-hop" and "shit/sellouts", while snobbing everything outside the genre.

    EDIT:
Pop - If you listen anything with a scream, damn you have problems... same if you like a band that really know how to play an instrument and not just show his/her pretty face
But pop fans loooooove screams. XD *ponts Céline Dion, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey...*
