Sunday Explosion
30 XI 2010, 15:47 przez ma0sm
Sun 14 Nov – Club Fandango
Online at God Is In The TV.
Sunday night? Sunday fucking night!? Seriously, it's freezing, it's late and Kentish Town is feeling like another country as I trek to the nearest Northern Line tube (damn you Victoria Line closure, you win this time and every time).
The fact is, I'm going to this gig for The Rock of Travolta. I've only heard a little of their music, but what I have heard I've liked and any band with Shellac & Trail Of Dead comparisons give me an involuntary semi from the get go.
Upon arrival, it seems I'm not alone in my disdain for wintry Sundays as we appear to be the only people there who aren't playing in a band or promoting the night. Saying that though, our arrival time is notably early as I had factored 50 hours (approximately) to get to the place, including getting lost time and "shall we stop off for a quick one here on the way" time which turned out to be a little excessive.
I felt sorry for Cutback who played to a nearly empty room, empty enough that my self-consciousness kept me hidden in the bar area. I wondered if perhaps their name invoked depressing, recession based thoughts in those who had considered attending as the sounds that leaked from the double doors suggested a very polished take on power punk pop with emo leanings. A little too clear-cut for my tastes, and worrying me a little that the supports tonight may be a mismatched bodge rather than a complimentary feast of adrenalised post-rock.
These fears aren't helped by second band of the night, Clockwork Radio, with their journey through early 2000s popular guitar music, sticking predominantly to radio a-list friendly influences. Their music is pleasant enough, though aside from the singer's high pitched, commanding voice, there's little coherence between the songs to give the band any distinguishing sound of their own. The set starts promisingly enough with a folk prog take on Muse integrated with latter-day MGMT, and some of the more affable elements of Britpop with an abundance of bright guitars, but the sub-Chili Peppers funk of the penultimate song followed by an indulgent forgettable Phil Collins ballad closer suggests a po-faced indecisiveness as to who they really want to be.
The room fills out for The Abiyoyo who seem to have brought quite an entourage with them. With a cheeky swagger in their stage presence, the music begins with a gentle riff, immediately bringing to mind the melodic builds of Mogwai. Affable as they are, they also suffer from the lack of an imprint within their sound or complimentary musical interplay between the various members of the band. Their influences are displayed proudly on their sleeves with the high end guitarist in particular showing no shame whatsoever in his love of the delay ridden clean sound Explosions In The Sky have so perfectly defined as their own. It's only on the last song, a cover of a Philip Glass song that these shortcomings become so apparent. Nowhere else during the set do the band show such a confidence in the music they create and on no other track do you get swept away with the mood and tempo changes during its progression as opposed to feeling some sort of clinical detachment from the sounds being made which rarely amount to more than the sum of their parts.
Alas very few of The Abiyoyo entourage last long enough for the true treat of the evening. The Rock of Travolta, whose current line-up numbers just five, create the sort of adrenalised instrumental rock that pumps raw adrenaline through you involuntarily, pleading with your self-consciousness to dance like a maniac. This is not Sunday night music, this is the soundtrack to a vitriolic cleansing of a Friday night to forget your woes of the working week amongst others with a collectively empathetic state of mind. Instead, the band power through their set as though their lives depend on it to a woefully underwhelming audience when if there were any justice in the world the majority of the sweat tonight would be flying from the flailing limbs in front of the stage as opposed to descending from it. Do you like 65daysofstatic? If yes then you should check this band out immediately and if not then please stop reading this right now dad. Masters of dynamics, the inclusion of the cello and synth elements aid a variation in the tempo and sound that only seems to make it all the more explosive when the giant unified onslaughts all kick in together. Even in my spacey Sunday night mindset, I can't help but get caught up in the unapologetic loudness of it all, giving you enjoyment on both animalistic and chin stoking levels which is a rare accomplishment that should be savoured.
With over ten years of existence it feels a shame to see a band of this calibre in an environment such as this. This is music that needs to be experienced live and on a suitable bill with an appropriate crowd, the effect of which could be truly devastating. Here's hoping they carry on regardless, and here's another to add to this list of those who worship at The Rock of Travolta. -

Sometimes you can stand in a crowd in an atmosphere that should be right up your street yet you just aren't feeling it, you're just not into it. Even the surprise addition of Pulled Apart By Horses to the bill should at the very least have had me quaking with excitement. Alas a combination of too many nights on the trot and the intense effect when you go out with just one other person and end up having deep and meaningful conversations rather than merely blowing off some steam meant that despite my best intentions, I did not make the most of this phenomenal line up.
Another casualty of the cursed new Xoyo venue where this event was supposed to be held, the late relocation to Electrowerkz was fortunate considering this was a multi room event. As we arrived supposedly half way through the first DJ set, most rooms were still closed off and under preparation, it dawned on us that the time schedules may be optimistic at best, so to the bar it was.
It was here that we whiled away the time chatting about women, ageing and the futile existence of our lives drinking £3 cans of Red Stripe whilst awaiting the second room to open ready for Future of the Left to blow us away. A little earlier on the bill for them than would be ideal, but nonetheless, their playing that was why I was here in the first place.
As FOTL's stage time approached, we casually made our way to where they were playing, to see how behind schedule things were running. As we ascended the stairs, the vitriolic bile of Chin Music bled through the corridor alarming us as we picked up the pace. Excitement levels raised as we were about to step through the double doors when disaster struck.
"No more allowed in, sorry" said my new mortal enemy, the bouncer.
A bad atmosphere cut through those now stranded on the stairs as people shuffled around accusing each other of pushing in front to try and get in (I was one of the accusers). Eventually after much professional looking walky talky button pressing, the bouncer pointed out that there was another entrance to the room that required going right around the venue which was apparently still letting people in. Untrusting of this information, thinking it was just a way to disperse an angry crowd, the people complained that they'd lose their place at the front of the line for an empty promise. As the tensions rose, the doors opened as someone left the room giving me a sight of the stage. "Look, a woman" I exclaimed whilst pointing at the band, by reflex, not thinking of what I sounded like. In my defence, I was actually commenting on an evident change in line up with Steven Hodson no longer on temporary bass duties and the fact that to date this had been an all male band. However I'm sure to those around me I just looked like some sexist pig for whom breaks away from rock band stereotypes were genuine shocks. Embarrassed, I decided this was a good time to go check the other entrance.
Finally we found our way, and true to the bouncers word, we were in with ease as the opening notes of [track artist=Future Of The Left]Manchasm kicked in. It was immediately obvious looking out at the sea of static heads that this crowd was fucking lame. Maybe it was the relatively early time in the evening, maybe it was because most people were just waiting for British Sea Power (idiots), but after the FOTL shows at 229 & The Lexington with crowds going absolutely spare, this felt deflating in comparison. The only solution was to make our way to the very front and join the six or seven people who actually seemed to be dancing like idiots, a style I have much experience in. Our timing was perfect as the opening notes to the mclusky song
To Hell With Good Intentions kicked in. The inclusion of Mclusky tracks seem to be regulars for their sets now and I can only assume the choice of songs to resurrect are the ones Jon Chapple had the smallest hand in, pretty much retaining them as property of Andy Falkous. Whatever the motivation, as expected the crowd erupt for the two song Mccombo of that and
Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues.
We're treated to a number of new tracks, which make first impressions as being more immediate than tracks of old. Hearing songs live from the first two albums before hearing the finished versions I recall them not blowing me away, though repeated listens resulted in me cherishing the recordings. Future Of The Left's music is so simple, and intense, it could so easily fall on the wrong side of amazing if it weren't for Falco's incredible ability to create such intensity without a note wasted. On the other hand, the next album may just be fucking great in a different way, whatever it is I'm hungry to find out.
The set concluded with the ritual dismantling of the drumkit during a rare live outing of the song
Lapsed Catholics which no doubt has more than a little to do with the timing of the Pope's visit to London. "He's on the guestlist" Falco quipped at one point during the trademark inter-song chat with much of it focused on that very subject. It's a relief that new member Jimmy Watkins is a more than suitable successor to Kelson Mathias to bounce off Falco with witty and cutting conversation between songs.
Alas, not long after the set concluded is where my evening at Rockfeedback X ended. Deflated, exhausted and strangely bewildered, it's a tragedy that we missed the incredible Three Trapped Tigers and Pulled Apart By Horses. Alas that's just the way these things turn out sometimes. Instead we ended up going to The Lexington to continue drinking rather than go home or stick around for more ace music, both of which would have been more sensible. Looking back now, I wonder why we did leave, but being the stubborn, moody bastard that I am, I'm sure I had unfaultable logic at the time. -

God Is In The TV Zine presents Name Is Calla in Cardiff. The orchestral rock pioneers come back to Cardiff to launch new album 'The Quiet Lamb' . This show at Clwb Ifor Bach forms part of an extensive and no doubt dynamic tour of the UK.
Her Name Is Calla return this year with a new full-length album named 'The Quiet Lamb' on Denovali Records. The album sees the band fully immersed into their song writing, making clear steps forward from their highly acclaimed previous album 'The Heritage'.
Described by Drowned In Sound as "one of the UK's most forward thinking bands", Her Name Is Calla are known for their impressive live shows full of emotion, explosions of noise and passages of the quietest, most gentle harmonies. They've been compared to Radiohead, GSYBE!, I Like Trains, A Silver Mt. Zion, Codeine and Explosions in the Sky.
Based around as core unit of five members, the band wields a multitude of instruments, from drums and guitar to recorders and synthesis, from violin and trombone to vocals and harmonica. The resulting sound is dense but controlled.
'The Quiet Lamb' is the result of years of planning and one years recording and mixing. Stretched over the course of 75 minutes, the new album finds the band at their most passionate to date taking the listener through a journey of ten songs, each one a part of a whole.
"Her Name Is Calla are masters of the slow build, but their approach never seems formulaic as you are never quite sure exactly when the crash is going to come. Timeless and ageless." God Is In The TV Zine

HAIL! THE PLANES
http://www.myspace.com/hailtheplanes
Hail! The Planes is a post-folk band from Cardiff. Things began in October 2007 when four friends got together and made a folky racket in a small room above an estate agents. The band is made up of Holly who plays violin and sings, David who plays guitar and sings, Mark who plays bass and sings and Robert who plays drums and doesn't sing.
They are influenced by instrumental bands like Do Make Say Think and Dirty Three, and also more vocally-oriented indie like Broken Social Scene and Low. We recently recorded in session on Bethan Elfyn's BBC Radio 1 Introducing show, the result of which you can listen to on our MySpace page.
Tracks from the "Tree Creeper" EP have also been played been played on Adam Walton's BBC Radio Wales show, and by John Kennedy on his Xfm X-posure show (on which we were a featured artist).
"I've been won over I hope you will be too, as they certainly are the most exciting band in Wales right now" - Bethan Elfyn
"Post-rock collides with folk in an intrepid romance. It's beautiful, smart and lyrical. Just plain super" - Miniature Music Press

The Silent Ballet: Volume 16
Volume 16 marks the completion of the fourth year of The Silent Ballet Compilation Series. Throughout the series we have discovered a lot of noteworthy acts, rekindled the flame with old favorites, and watched the development of multiple musical scenes right before our eyes. We’re just as optimistic and excited about the future as we were four years ago, and every new release makes us as giddy as ever.
This edition is a first for the series; Volume 16 is the first compilation to contain a video track. Our gratitude goes out to The Sleepy Vines, who made this possible and has perhaps opened a door that will be investigated in the future.
A big thanks goes out to all the artists and labels who made this project possible. Relevant links can be found below; any support is greatly appreciated.
