What are you ripping and tagging with?

I'm using abcde to rip and tag my files to ogg (-q "5.5") which I mostly play on my squeezebox,
but also use xmms at my computer.

When I come across a CD that's not in freedb, I use grip to submit it, but still rip with abcde.

I fix broken tags with vorbiscomment.el

With last.fm standardizing (I guess, as Brits, they're standardising) on musicbrainz, I'd really like a way to pull tag info from there. I did build their picard tagger with some difficulty, but I can't figure out how to do anything useful with it.

What are the rest of you using to rip/tag under Debian (or Linux in general)?

Well I use Grip to rip files .ogg (-q 8) xmms for playing and easytag to tag ...

I had also many problems with the musicbrainz tager, it crashed always with startup...

patience is a virtue, at the moment I am content with easytag

I use kaudiocreator, ogg-vorbis -q 9, to rip and get the CDDB and tag, then I check the tags against musicbrainz... I use amarok to do spot checks for tiles of albums, and use easytag for for 'inserting' the new music in my
    ./music/%genera/%artist/%album/%track#-%tracktitle music file tree schema

I played with picard a bit(*attempted* to build, maybe 4~6months ago), but the tone of the readme was not really to my liking. Seemed to have a lot of version_specific dependencies, I tend to run away from source trees that have too_many external depends...
Is it better now? should I try again... Checking against musicbrainz by *hand* really takes a chunk out of my *fun time*

For portability I use the Neuros DB manager to remove/convert filename char's that are not compatible with the fat32 filesystem that my neuros uses

Building picard in sid wasn't too bad when I tried it about a month ago. The required wxpython libs are apt-gettable. I had to build the latest libmusicbrainz and libtunepimp from source, but ./configure ; make ; make install worked flawlessly, so no biggie there.

I still couldn't figure out how to get it to tag my files, though. I spent quite a bit of time on this a few nights ago, because I'd really like to use musicbrainz as the definitive source for my tagging data.

Maybe you could give it a shot and take a look? Maybe I'm just dense when it comes to GUIs.

I use cdparanoia for ripping; I usually rip the whole CD to a single file, then use flac to compress it, get the table of contents using "cdrdao read-toc --with-cddb", convert it to a cue sheet with cueconvert, and then merge the flac and the sheet into a Matroska container using mkvmerge. Sounds like a lot of fun, but I have a silly home-made python script that does that for me. :)

Of course, after that I have to get the wav out of the container to slice it into tracks and encode to Vorbis, so I could tag it with Easytag, and then use XMMS2 to actually listen to it and have the metadata submitted. :)

I wish Picard wouldn't be so "bleeding edge". I managed to build it on Etch with the default wxpython libs; apart from occasionaly crashing with a segfault it worked fine, I even tagged an album! After finding it impossible to build a fresh wxpython, I gave up, and now am waiting for someone to put Picard in unstable and eventually testing. That's just half a year, yay. :) For those interested in how to use the tagger, I suggest starting with the docs. I think it has some builtin help as well.

Usually with Grip but today tried K3b and it did a great job. :)

  • I also use abcde to rip to ogg with -q 10, for no reason. abcde handles the tagging for me along the way.

    amaroK for tagging

I use amaroK for tagging, often using the built-in musicbrainz lookup. I also use amaroK for listening :)

    flac\easytag

I rip with grip, compress my waws with flac, tag them with easytag and listen em with xmms

  • Another abcde user here. I encode to flac and either ogg (q 5) or mp3 (lame --preset standard), or both.

I was using easytag, but since I started using Quod Libet as my player, I've switched to using it for tagging also. The Musicbrainz plugin for Quod Libet is priceless! I get all that Musicbrainz "standardising" ecstasy without the agony of the Picard tagger.

  • I made friends with grip... there are things where you don't essentially need to know all console commands :D
easytag for tagging, and (of course!) amaroK for playing :)

    ripit.pl Perl script

with cdparanoia and oggenc -q 8

  • kaudiocreator with flac --replay-gain . Tagging is handled by kaudiocreator which query freecddb I believe.

I play the files on my squeezebox and my iaudio x5 60gb.

    abcde

I use just what you wrote probably, but without having to know much about command line syntax. abcde automagic fits it all within one config file.

    ups... I said something.

    Well

I'm using cdparanoia to rip, lame to convert,
and easytag to tag my mp3 files - 3 steps - 1 script.
