The Bimhuis provides a perspective on Dutch and international music in over 300 concerts annually, in which a variety of jazz and improvised music can be enjoyed. The focus is on new developements,...



Branford is unsparing in his enthusiasm for the Amsterdam club, which has been a center for jazz in Europe since it opened in 1973. "I only played there once before, with Art Blakey in 1981, and I've wanted to bring my own band into the Bimhuis ever since," he admits. "It's simply one of the two or three best jazz clubs in the world, because the room is intimate and the focus is on presenting the music instead of selling food and drinks. There is a bar outside of the performance space, and people do go there to hang, but once they walk into the club itself, it's all about the music." The Bimhuis (pronounce: bim-house)", he volunteers at once, naming the Amsterdam venue that has played a crucial role in that city's creative music evolution (...)'. (The New Yorker, February 2003).

Bimhuis activities are supported by the Ministerie of OCW and the City of Amsterdam.

    Bij het Yo la Tengo meende ik te zien dat de rode gehavende basgitaar die James McNew bespeelde, de basgitaar van Jeroen Vierdag (Ploctones) moest zijn. Dit weekend zag ik bij mn broer tijdens een dvd van Michael Bublé dat in zn begeleidingsorkest een saxofonist (Mark Small) uit Darcy James Argue´s Secret Society speelde... Am I a Nerd or what?!

    Wat kan je eigenlijk met een Last FM groep? Heeft iemand ervaring en/of voorbeelden?

    wakirimasen, ik denk dat er veel jonger publiek zal zijn dan bij de seizoensopening. Zo druk is het trouwens relatief vaak. Ook bij Beat Dimensions in mei in ieder geval, en het publiek bestond toen uit bijna louter twintigers en wat tieners. Het wisselt ontzettend per concert, dat is altijd interessant om te zien. Je theorie over vroeg komen klopt, en meestal eerbiedigt iedereen de jas of tas op de stoel als teken van reservering. Wellicht had die vrouw pech, maar je daad was er niet minder galant om. Dank voor je bijdrage in ieder geval.

    Ik ben nog maar 2 keer geweest. De 1e keer was voor Ernst Reijseger. Mooie zaal! De voorste rij zit erg dicht op t podium. Het was toen helemaal niet druk. Veel ouder publiek. De 2e keer was gisteren, voor the Ploctones/Sanne van Hek/Harmen Fraanje. Misschien omdat t de seizoensopening was, maar t was druk! Alles bezet tot op de treedjes. Ik stond mijn zitje voor de 2e set af aan een vrouw die op t treedje heeft moeten zitten. De man die haar vergezelde zei me dat ze vooraf, voordat ze daar gingen eten, plaatsen bezet hadden gehouden, maar dat dit niet had gewerkt. (I don´t know), maar volgens mij moet je er gewoon voor zorgen dat je ongeveer een half uur van te voren in de zaal bent. Ik ging aan de zijkant van t podium zitten. Niet zo slim, want ik had zo een minder gunstige positie om foto´s te nemen. Ik vraag me af hoe t straks zal zijn met het Steven Reid ensemble/Kieran Hebden, hoe t oudere publiek zich zal verhouden met t jongere (85 LastFm attendees)..

    I've been to the Bim-house once, when ICP played there a couple of weeks ago. There was a lady in the audience, moaning 'jaaaaaa!'. It was quite ridicilous and funny at the same time. I didn't talk befriend her, but sometimes I still think back of her. I also created a Last.fm event for the Bimhuis once, I ended up not going.
