Tracks have been scrobbling twice when listening on iTunes

  • Tracks have been scrobbling twice when listening on iTunes

Hi, during the past week my Recently Played Tracks are scrobbled two times for some reason. You can take a look at my profile or http://www.last.fm/user/PlzDuntBanMe/tracks

    Thanks

did you check the known issues, especially the ipod/itunes related ones?

I also have been getting duplicate scrobbles using iTunes under Windows 7 64 bit and I have read the known problems.

What happens is that when I play tracks, they are scrobbled correctly. Sometimes, when I restart iTunes I will find that some of the tracks get scrobbled a second time. Sometimes the date/time stamps are the same, sometimes the duplicate scrobbles have a date/time stamp a couple of minutes after the original/correct scrobble. The tracks that are duplicated are not necessarily contiguous. Up till now, us few as one or two or as many as fifteen to twenty scrobbles could be duplicated at any given time.

I at first thought this behavior was tied to syncing my iPod, but that has proven to not be the case. This is an intermittent problem. I get duplicate scrobbles a couple times one day and then go several days with no problems.

Check this FAQ, and let us know if it helps: When listening to my manual iPod via iTunes, the tracks get scrobbled twice.

As I said in my post, I at first thought that the double scrobbling was linked to syncing my iPod as I first noticed it under that circumstance, and I was aware of the issue in the faq you referenced. However, over time it has become clear that the issue is not related to syncing my ipod because the double scrobbling happens more often than not when I am not syncing my iPod nor when I even have my iPod attached to the computer.

The tracks that have duplicate scrobbles are usually those that are from the immediately previous listening session, although some duplicate scrobbles are from farther back in my listening history. I will play a track in iTunes and when that track gets scrobbled, one or more earlier tracks get re-scrobbled, sometimes with the exact same date and time stamp as the original scrobble and sometime with a time stamp of a few minutes later, as I mentioned in my previous post. Also, again as I mentioned, the duplicate tracks are not always consecutive.

There is no iPod involvement in this process that I can see. My iPod may not even have been connected recently. Also, I cannot remember any of the tracks that I played on my iPod ever having been scrobbled twice, only tracks played directly through iTunes.

This is also an intermittent problem, and I have so far been so far unsuccessful in replicating it, having it happen when I want it to happen.

When I notice the duplicate scrobbles, I go into the Recently Listened list and delete the duplicates.

  • I can't believe it's still occurring. My tracks listened is all screwed up now...it has doubled.

  • I have to manually delete each repeated song. This only happens just for iTunes. When i scrobble with my iPhone, it's fine :S

  • I have this problem from time to time and I don't use iTunes, so perhaps the Apple connection is a red herring. Up to 20 repeats of a single scrobble and all over the place not all together, I only notice when I see I've had a popular song for the last three months I don't know.

  • Gah, any responses? I have to waste a few minutes of my life manually deleting all the double scrobbled tracks! Here's an example...

I have the same issue. If I try to delete the duplicate track, then the original play is also deleted. If this has been going on for months with several people then why hasn't something been done to remedy the problem?

I occasionally have this problem, although most of the time I end up with duplicate scrobbles they are actual duplicates and deleting the dup does not delete the original. But you can't tell just by looking at the chart which problem you have: actual dups or a second scrobble (which adds to the count) tied to the first as you have mentioned.

I think these are two problems, although they may be connected.

  • Hey, the problem doesn't seem to occur anymore. I've been waiting 4 days to see if any of my tracks duplicated and glad to see none of that now. Thanks

Just an update. The problem is still occurring, but the behavior of the Last.fm client has changed. I haven't downloaded any updates, so I don't know why the client's behavior has changed, but it has.

In the past, tracks the client thought hadn't already been scrobbled would be scrobbled, creating false duplicate entries as described above which I then had to manually delete. Although this still happens from time to time, more often than not I now get a box with a list of tracks the client thinks need scrobbling. I can uncheck any tracks that have already been scrobbled and then click on the "Scrobble" button to actually submit the scrobbles. The client is still thinking scrobbled tracks haven't been scrobbled as before, but now it is often giving me the chance to correct the entries before they are submitted.

  • Sigh, nevermind, it's back again. Thing is that those tracks I've scrobbled within the week, have ALL duplicated. I'm not even going to take my time and deleting hundreds of dupped tracks.

    I've lost faith in this...

Have you tried the beta version of the new client to see if this resolves this issue?

  • I haven't had any problems scrobbling my iPhone until yesterday when every track I submitted has been scrobbled about 8-9 times for each play, with the same timestamp. When I delete one song, all 8-9 of them disappear...

I originally didn't want to play with the beta version, but I will and after using it for a few days I will report my experiences back here.

I have had several problems with the new beta client which I have discussed here, but so far I have not had any duplicate scrobbles.

EDIT: I spoke too soon. I just had three duplicate scrobbles. The beta client says they were scrobbled from my iPod, however the original scrobbles were played on my computer and not from my iPod and my iPod was not plugged into my computer when my scrobbles were duplicated.

EDIT2: A fourth duplicate just appeared.

Duplicate scrobbles from your iPod may come from listening to the same track via iTunes while your iPod is connected. We read your playcount updates, and iTunes will update your iPod playcount while it's connected, thus causing the scrobbler to read those plays as iPod scrobbles. Does this sound like what might be happening?

Not really. I had just synced my iPod. I had played 5 tracks. So far, the only way I have been able to get tracks played from my 1st Gen iPod Touch scrobbled via the beta client is to open a playlist on my iPod while it is connected to iTunes and play a track. The 5 tracks were then scrobbled. I disconnected my iPod and played some more tracks from iTunes. The track I played from my iPod was then scrobbled. The beta client said I had scrobbled 5 tracks from my iPod, so it saw the track I played from an iPod playlist while it was attached to iTunes as having been played by iTunes, which makes sense to me. After playing a few more tracks, 3 duplicate scrobbles appeared. The scrobbles that were duplicated were of tracks that had been played from iTunes without the iPod being connected a day and over 60 scrobbles earlier. The client then told me it had scrobbled 8 tracks from my iPod.

I thought I then saw a 4th duplicate scrobble appear, but it turns out that was a legitimate duplicate play.

EDIT: An observation, the 3 duplicated scrobbles were of tracks played on my computer immediately before using my iPod. I don't know if this has any bearing or not.

Edit 2: I just had another duplicate scrobble. It appeared just after using the Chrome Free Last.fm Player. The track was originally played from iTunes and was the next to the last track played before using the Chrome Player. The last scrobble before using the Chrome Player was not duplicated.
