  • RIP my beloved last.fm

When is the music industry going to change this stupid forbid-everything mentality and try to adapt to the new standards? And can it be that last.fm couldn't do better than that?

I'm yet another extremely frustrated and disappointed subscriber who is cancelling his subscription.. So sad. RIP last.fm, it was so good while it lasted.

    Suicide yoursel last.fm guys

I am french, and I'm a suscriber since you made subscribtion mandatory for french users....

Now you are going to cancel one of the things the more interresting with last.fm... I cancelled my subscription today , I will continue to scrobble until the moment you will decide to cancel it too....

Befor that, I have one advice : you'd better suicide yourself... I can't understand why we cant play what we want to when we are subscribers, on deezer, spotify, you can make it for FREE !!!

  • Not a good move. Have been a user for 5 yrs, 4 yrs a subscriber and hoped this day would never come.
There is not much of a point being a subsciber anymore so I wont be renewing until I know what new features are in place..if any.

For all those i-cancelled-my-subscription guys. I think they have firgured in the loss of 10-20% customers so your assertions aren't going to change anything. Some of the customers are PayPal-happy and will stay no matter what, and there are certainly people who are going to wait and see what the advertised new functions are.

What I am wondering about now is if there is really some trade-off to be made. Is Last.fm going to get more music from the labels (20% chance) or was it just typical marketing gobbledygook (80% chance). Because this can make a big difference. I could live without these stations if they, say, doubled the number of streamable songs.

I did not cancel in hopes of them doing something about it. I just refuse to pay for a service that I can no longer enjoy. I subscribe to be able to listen to my personal tag stations as well as playlists & loved tracks. After Nov 17th there is no point to continue to give them any $. If this changes I will renew but I seriously doubt that will ever happen. I use www.rdio.com and MOG now. I do not need to pay lastfm also. Who is to say the next move wont be a total shut down of stat tracking. I can see the writing on the wall.

  • Complain more still...to the suits if necessary

I think one should go directly to the suits calling the shots in the CBS Digital group, the guys at LAST.FM have no clout since they were bought off. People are afraid to loose their jobs so they just go with the flow, money in the bank and f**k the client. So if no one is hearing us here we should go to the following emails, links and write positive and determined messages to the people in charge:

CBS LAST.FM customer service email: office@last.fm

CBS Interactive Feedback Form email (just for the annoy factor): http://www.cbs.com/info/user_services/fb_global_form.php

    CBS Digital Radio suits (from legal guys to PR guys): mbiemolt@cbs.com ; peter.bowen@cbsradio.com ; wayne.ward@cbsradio.com ; erik.white@cbsradio.com ; tdfrederickson@cbs.com ; nate.azark@cbsradio.com

Please write coherent messages to these people and explain in an polite way why it is wrong to do what they are doing and that there are people willing to pay more for a better service that is inclusive of what is being cut and a few more benefits. Show that LAST.FM is a viable service and a landmark in the internet music market even more so than iTunes. All these emails and links are public and are not a breach of privacy, they are there for the exact reason i am posting them, feedback from users/clients. MAKE YOURSELVES HEARD PEOPLE!

I would definitely would hate last.fm then. I am trying out Pandora.com again i like the setup better & the radio customization seems much better then last.fm. However last.fm does give more obscure artists a chance while pandora is mostly 'whats out there'. Trying a few things out with the artist seeds & track seeds.

  • I would have wrote my reply yesterday but I was left stunned and speechless by reading this shocking news. (Not to mention music-less..)

I'm not happy with this "no playlists" malarkey at all. As a long-time subscriber and active user of playlists, it will be a major loss to the Last.fm experience for me. This website used to be great the way it was before without all the changes, and fiddling about with adding features that quite frankly the majority of us doesn't want or use that much. All we want is to play the songs we like.

After 17th November, I can imagine (in a bad dream) having to sit through a lot of bad songs on the global tag stations that we simply do not want to hear, to get to a few good ones that we do, frustrating us the listeners. I'll have to return to listening to cds to hear some I guess. Last.FM when you could listen to songs in full was great for discovering and more importantly listening to new music. But now that's gone. How are we going to hear the great new music that is recommended to us now? Because if you playlist what is recommended to you, you're stuffed. And by tagging, well, that'd take forever for that particular song to come around on a global station.

This is not a good deal for subscribers, but i'll stick with you for now until I see the next update after No Playlist day, when I hope and fully expect to see something great and very big developments and strides forward. Not more disintegration of a once mighty website, in which if this is the case then I may be forced begrudgingly away from this site, or at least stopping using it as much as I currently do and withdrawing my subscription. What a shame.

I don't want to waste my time tagging songs again, only for that to p!$$ off as well in 6 months time in the next update. We need a quick and easy way of tagging all songs within a playlist without having to redo each and every track individually one by one like that we're all being forced to do so now that we can play them again. A button should be introduced alongside every playlist under "tag all as" or something like that. That would at least appease me, please seriously consider this option. It'd probably be very easy to add I would imagine. Support my idea HERE if you agree!

I don't want to quit being a subscriber, it does have it's advantages, but I definitely think that the cost of subscribing should be reduced now, or if you stay on a subscriber you get a year free or something at least reduced off of the price of carrying on. It simply isn't worth that without being able to play the music that you want to hear when you want to hear it, the one key functionability that I want from this site.

I used to really love Last.FM but you're ruining it update by update. :-(

"November 17th - the day the music dies."

  • kinda glad i never subscribed
nor wasted myt time creating playlists
    and taggin songs

ill keep listening to the global radio stations
until i get bored of the recurring songs on em
and then just move on i suppose

    if i was an subscriber
i would have been because i wanted to listen to my fav loved songs
and because i would want to create playlsts and listen to them
128k is not cd quality RIAA
    get over it already

dont see the point for anyone here anymore
    to keep a subscription

    i bet the new features
    are gonna be more advertisments
thats where the big money is
not a few dollars per person subscription

ill def be gone when i get streaming adverts
and back to my local college radio stations

i feel bad for all the peops
who wasted alot of time and effort here
to make this place very cool
cbs took the coolness factor away
    and so it goes

    welcome to the machine

  • Station Changes

I'm posting this still in shock and anger after logging in this morning and spotting the pathetically small notice about the November 17th station changes.

    Tiny notice..big sodding impact!

Check my grecian2007 profile - I have185 personally tags and 25 playlists which I have built up over the last 3 years of listening to last.fm. I hate being compartmentalised - I want to listen to the widest range of music and the personal playlist format meant I could mix the Pussycat Dolls, Afel Bocoum, Steely Dan, Swervedriver and Beck successively, if I wanted. At a stroke you will wipe out the main advantage of last.fm to me and as yet I see no viable alternative!

If that wasn't bad enough, the way you communicate this is spectacularly clumsy and really gives the impression that you don't give a monkeys about the effect these changes will have on your subscribers!

First of all you give a paltry 4 weeks of notice - not much time to investigate potential alternatives to last.fm, is it? You give cursory advice of the loss of the services, along with some airy-fairy promise of a feature "you know we'll love" (I'll wait and see before I judge thank you very much.)

And then there's a link promising supposed options if we're still disappointed. But when you click through there are no options in fact, just a button to get a refund.

What you're saying is, if you don't like the changes, just f***off! Is this the best you can do in the way of sensitive and diplomatic communication?

Oh, by the way you may like to know that I chose my most recent mobile phone and its 18-month contract on the basis that I would be able to stream tracks from my last.fm playlists - are you going to refund me that as well?

A very disappointed and angry subscriber,

    Grecian2007

And no, I can't tell you that the change is making Last.fm better. Sadly, it is a necessary change. "Why?" is your next question. "Business reasons," is the next answer, which sounds vague but I can't give more details, sadly

This entire move actually comes as no shock to me, aside from the fact I have seen moderators and staff members time and again use tag radio and loved track radio as major selling points for even getting, or keeping a subscription. So to hang you guys out to dry like this on it is really fucked up on the part of CBS/Viacom. But really, how much do they care about you peons in an acquired asset that is their bottom earner.

The reason that this was done was clear, and simple CBS/Viacom has other assets that offer services that are in direct conflict with what last.fm offers. It is the primary reason they purchased this site, to starve off the the conflicting services through attrition of all that were in competition. Which inevitably only leaves one service that Last.fm has that is unique to the site.

The ability to index everything you are listening to, build a database of the artists, albums, songs and labels. To identify where they are musically in relation to their neighbors and help provide the user with new artists who are in the same neighborhood.

Now, this is what I use this site for. I hardly ever listen to any music on this site, save the few artists I have found here specifically and this was the place they had their music streaming. But, you guys.. As I've tried to raise the awareness and importance of to you as the staff, is that your statistical index information is shoddy at best compared to other sites like discogs. All this ties in with what I've been pestering you about for a year and a half.

That without statistical integrity, Last.fm has nothing.

You guessed it and you win the prize iTranscendence =) Lastfm is not even mentioned at CBS shareholders meetings. Lastfm is buried under obscure titles in CBS's SEC filings and execs are suddenly mute and deaf, if you try to get a direct and informative answer to this situation. Oh yes, you guessed it alright - Gannett did the same thing to literally 100's of competitive news media outlets, I watched them purchase their competition and absorb them, or kill them, over a 14 year period, so I can clearly visualize what you have just said, as being the perfect case scenario.

So what do you think the solution is?

    This is what I see..

I think if they revamp their statistical indexing capabilities through automation with better algorithms and as you know my well discussed move more towards a discogs wiki model for editing site info, decentralize what is listened to on this site by integrating other sites ability to stream on last.fm, give the users the ability to easily in a micro-blog format share what they are listening to with their friends and have a small royalty free independent on demand streaming that is integrated with everything else and they could still pull this out of the fire.

All I know is that if CBS attempts to kill this site entirely including the scrobbling, shit may get Dogma on them.

Things could be a lot worse. I have faith in the Last.fm team, and believe that they're doing the best that they can. Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with for this new station. I subscribe to support Last.fm, since the radio is free for me. So long as I can discover artists, I'll stick around. Keep up the good work guys.

  • Saying good bye to "my music"

I,m playing my play lists.... saying goodbye to all my love tracks, so sad I could not write anything about it till now.... it has been a wonderful time for the past 3 o 4 years, now is finish..... nothing will be the same any more......

    CBS/LAST.FM = EPIC FAIL!!

This is nothing more than a move to "control" what you hear rather than what you want to hear. If last.fm really cared about us the "users" as they so proclaim this would not be happening. Period. They would find a way to make it work. Even if that means jacking up the subscription pricing.

    Very undecided...

I am very undecided about Last.fm at the moment, because there were promised new subscriber features by CBS unit’s product VP Fred McIntyre for Q2 2010, and now that. :(

That's why this announcement is a big disappointment, even though i didn't have used these discontinued radio stations that much, as less than 1% of subscribers have used them as i was told.

    But let's wait and see...

Lastfm is gonna lose alot of loyal subscribers after this whole thing..And 3 a month doesn't seem like alot but when you have numerous subscribers that is alot of money that you guys at Lastfm is gonna lose..Then you guys are gonna regret it after the damage is already done... :-((

    Capitalism?

I can't agree to this very suspect decision of last.fm.
The radios were an good way to listen to some different artists and discover so new ones. Without it, last.fm is going to loose something... something, what was really a big part of it and which formed it!
The tragedy is, that you only concentrate on the money nowadays - and not really to music.

i agree that subscribers need more features , something more than what simple users have . but you can not remove free users features , add something new for them , otherwise you'll lose a lot of your users ...
btw i think you should stop changing this last too much ...

  • What about other investments because of LAST.FM?

I bet grecian2007 got a nice android phone so he could run the android app to listen to his loved tracks, i myself invested in an Android tablet whose main use was ( you guessed it) listen to my Loved Tracks and my friends Playlists. How about that? I spent around $200 bucks in this crap just because of LAST.FM, i annoyed the developer so that the android app worked better on my device and now 4 months later it`s main use has been obliterated. God...i even thought of buying a shinny new phone and an internet data plan so i could have my tracks on the go....not any more. Keeping my crappy Windows Mobile Phone, which already scrobbles to LAST.FM and apparently that is as good as it gets. I know what music i love, LAST.FM was working fine for my music taste, i was paying because of that and now you screw this up. What next? - No recommended tracks?, Cannot hear my friends Radios? What? WHAT?
