Contemporary Color
A Pep Rally Pop Music Mashup. World Premiere. Only two performances!
Conceived by David Byrne. Commissioned by Luminato Festival and Brooklyn Academy of Music with support from WGI Sport of the Arts.
Pop stars sync steps with 10 high school colour guard teams from across North America in Contemporary Color: an epic, arena-scale staging of sport, music and culture.
Talking Heads founder, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Luminato Festival alumnus David Byrne shares the stage with Canada’s own Nelly Furtado and an extraordinary array of talent including How to Dress Well, Devonté Hynes, Kelis, Nico Muhly and Ira Glass, St. Vincent, tUnE-yArDs; plus 350 performers and a 15 piece band to create 100-minutes of sabre-spinning, flag-flipping, sequin-studded spectacle.
Each superstar artist works one-on-one with a student colour guard team to produce a mind-blowing meld of brand new, original music, performed live on a 100 by 70 foot stage at the Air Canada Centre.
Colour guard, a competitive art form that has evolved out of military tradition, fuses athletic team sport, high octane acrobatics and pep rally spirit. Part of a wildly popular phenomenon in high schools, colleges and universities across North America, colour guard teams of 20 to 40 performers set dazzling routines to music using props like flags, rifles, and sabres.
