Niche Productions presents two of the most singular and exciting young voices to emerge in underground Hip Hop, Detroit’s Danny Brown and LA’s MED in their first Australian performances. Danny Brown recently topped end-of-year lists with his second mixtape XXX, a dark yet humorous narrative entailing his struggles and excesses to reach thirty years of age. Over a sinister mix of minimalist beats and synthesizers, Brown openly discusses his drug use and financial woes, a refreshing departure from chart topping clichés.
Taking a more traditional approach to the genre, Stones Throw’s MED has spent recent years collaborating with the crème of Hip Hop. Working alongside premiere beat makers Madlib, The Alchemist, and most recently Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, MED’s recordings have featured luminaries and newcomers such as Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, Aloe Blacc and Odd Future’s Hodgy Beats. A highly respected MC now coming to the fore, MED’s combination of inventive production and engaging storytelling is resetting the genre’s template.
For Vivid Live 2012, Niche Productions will showcase two new rappers with opposite approaches – one rebuilding the core of Hip Hop whilst the other working around it. Joined by the equally divergent Ellesquire and Halfway Crooks DJs, Danny Brown and MED will highlight a particularly fertile period in the genre’s underground, all set in the intimate surrounds of The Studio.
