Patterns
WED 28 MAR, 5 – 9PM
An evening of experimental music with performances from up-and-coming artists, based on themes of impending apocalypse drawn from The Hepworth Wakefield’s Spring Exhibition series featuring Heather & Ivan Morrison, Ben Rivers and David Thorpe.
Patterns
At a time when most new bands are shouting loudly, desperately in your face for attention at every turn, Patterns’ rise to prominence is a refreshing recall to the days when new music and sounds were discovered as a result of meandering exploration, when gems were stumbled upon live, hiding away in metropolitan backwaters or isolated rural territories. In the four-piece’s case they were “found” last year in the basement venue of a Mancunian suburb, curating their own monthly shows – having only formed some weeks previously - their sincere, wistful dream-pop drifting up and out of the stairwell, illuminating their surroundings, painting its maudlin Autumnal streets in soft-glow Technicolor.

Her Name Is Calla
Described as one of the UK’s „most daring, unconventional bands” by Drowned in Sound, Her Name is Calla are known for their impressive live shows full of emotion, explosions of noise, and passages of the quietest, most gentle harmonies. The band wields a multitude of instruments, from drums and guitar, to records and synths; from violin and trombone, to vocals and harmonica. The resulting sound is dense but controlled. Debut album The Quiet Lamb is the result of years of planning, and an intense year of recording in bedrooms, schools and hallways. Her Name Is Calla have recently toured Eastern and Southern Europe in support of their beautiful Kinship: The Full Cycle release.

Runners
Selected by The Quietus to play their stage at London’s Field Day festival in 2011, Leeds based Runners are hot tips for the coming year. The band merge off the cuff, bleeping sound, with analogue synth keys tinkling across and driving beats – both live and electronic – and underlying wurring synth effects, vocals that contrast with the spikey animation of the keys and linger in the phrases, smoothing out the edges. Runners make gleeful noise-pop dance music, just because it’s fun to play, fun to watch and, well, fun to dance to as well.
