live visual performance provided throughout the evening by our very special guest VJ Grimly Fiendish

"On Friday 1st July 'The Falling Spikes' will be hosting 'A Night to Remember'- an evening of great music to aid the Alzheimer’s Society in their efforts to combat all forms of Dementia.

'A Night to Remember' will feature 5 great home-grown bands. Heading the night are two of York's firm favourites 'The Falling Spikes' & 'The Buccaneers'; also debuting are three new collaborations 'The Dub-barn Collective', 'Reason Breeds Monsters' and 'Rat Catcher's Mallets', and although you may not recognise these bands names, chances are you'll recognise some of the musicians involved from their appearances at festivals such as Leeds and Glastonbury and playing supports for the likes of Pulp and Shed Seven as well as their many appearances in and around York.

The event features a wide range of original music drawn from the worlds of blues, dub, folk, indie, psychedelia and rock. Also featured on the night will be a live visual projection show from VJ Grimly Fiendish whose ability to merge images seamlessly into the music experience is well known to those that have had the pleasure to see his previous shows.

Having seen the devastating effects of Alzheimer's for themselves prompted these musicians to want to help, or in their own words

“Just imagine slowly forgetting everything; what you like to do, what music you like, what you have done in the past, who your family is, where you are and who you are. Imagine the pain of the family seeing their loved one slowly die over a period of years, slowly getting worse, forgetting all family members even wives/husbands. Please try and make this stop for future generations and maybe even you.”

One in three people over 65 will die with dementia and it can effect anybody. The current financial cost of dementia to the UK is over £20 billion a year (to put that in perspective it is about 10 times the cost of smoking related illness.)

Jo Swinhoe, Director of Fundraising and Marketing at Alzheimer’s Society said,

“We are delighted that all these musicians are giving their time and energy to put on 'A Night to Remember' for us. As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals like these to help us care for people today and find a cure for tomorrow.

Please back The Falling Spikes and all the bands in their fund-raising efforts so that we can continue leading the fight against dementia.”

The event will take place at The Basement, below The City Screen on Coney Street (who have kindly amended their fees in support of such a great cause) in a friendly and accessible atmosphere with a good mix of standing and seating areas. Tickets are available for £5 from the venue on or online at www.thebasementyork.co.uk
